1. A powerful earthquake with the magnitude of 7.6 on the Ritcher scale struck West Sumatera at 17.16 local time on Wednesday, 30 September 2009. The epicenter of the quake is around 57 km of the north-west of Pariaman. The following day, another quake measuring on 7.0 on the Richter scale hit Jambi at 08.25 local time causing serious damage to public infrastructure. 2. According to the United Nations, up to 2 October 2009 at least 1,100 people have died and many hundreds more had been seriously injured. 3. The government of Indonesia has allocated US$ 25 million for emergency relief efforts.
